Digital Image Editing Web 2.0 Tools

Digital images have led millions of people to take pictures and videos that they can then upload to their personal computers. This has created a need for digital image editing programs and web tools. Here are some digital image editing web tools that I have reviewed in my Web 2.0 class.

1. Pixlr

Pixlr is a Web 2.0 tool designed to edit digital photos online by adding over 600 effects, overlays, and borders to personalize any image. I rated this tool twenty-four out of twenty seven because it is a user friendly. All the tools and effects are clearly labeled and easy to find. My only problems with the site were that there was only one email address in their contact information and there wasn’t much information on the awards they have won.

I would recommend this web tool to a classmate because it is easy to use and does quality photo editing.

2. Phixr

Phixr is a web 2.0 tool that edits pictures with boarders and frames, texts and fonts, distortions and much more. I rated this tool twenty-four out of twenty-seven because this tool meets all of the instructional goals for the assignment and is user friendly. There weren’t any tutorials, but I didn’t find the need for one because the tool was self-explanatory and clearly labeled. One problem was that it was difficult to find the contact information; I found it in the “terms of use” section. I also didn’t find any award for the tool.

I would recommend this tool to a classmate for this project because it can accomplish everything that they would need to do for this project.

3. FotoFlexer

FotoFlexer is another Web 2.0 tool that I reviewed.  It is an online digital image editor that can add different effects, fonts, shapes, and doodles to your image. It also supports layers, distorts pictures, and retouches blemishes and wrinkles. I gave the tool a twenty-three out of twenty-seven because the site has many awards and had a full feature list including screen shots and sample images. I had a few difficulties finding a tool I wanted on the editing page, but other than that the site was user friendly. The biggest problem this site had was its lack of contact information.

I would recommend this tool to a classmate because it edits photos well, but I think it would work best for someone who wants to edit their digital family photos without having to pay a professional because it has several effects and the retouch feature.

4. SplashUp

SplashUp is digital image editing web tool that can add text and other different effect to photos. I gave this tool a twenty out of twenty-seven. One good thing about this tool is that it has the “magnetic lasso” tool so you can crop objects from one picture and paste them onto another picture. A list of features and screen shots were also available. There were a few problems with the tool. One problem was that some links did not work.  It took a moment for the editing page to load, and on one occasion it wouldn’t load at all. There were few effects options available to use.

I wouldn’t recommend this to a classmate because of the site’s unreliability and the lack of special features that are found on other editing tools. I would recommend this tool to someone who wants to do basic editing and doesn’t mind if the page loads slowly.

5. Pixenate

Pixenate is a Web 2.0 tool that can be used to edit photos by cropping and rotating the picture, removing red eye and whitening teeth, and by changing brightness. I gave this tool the rating of eighteen out of twenty-seven. The tool accomplished the tasks above, but it didn’t have any filters or special effects to apply to photos. The site was also a little slow to apply changes to the photo. There was no contact information for the tool. The tool had a feed of comments and praise at the top of the page, but the site doesn’t seem to have been updated for several years. With the advances in technology in the recent years, I don’t believe that anyone would think that “[they] are very satisfied with Pixenate and haven't been so happy about a piece of software for a long time.”

I wouldn’t recommend this tool to a classmate for this project because there aren’t enough effects and tools to complete the project efficiently and creatively. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone because there are many other web tools that can do a lot more than this tool.
